14th Annual Adult Choir Member Workshop Attracts Many Participants

On Jan. 14, 155 participants, representing 17 churches throughout the United States, attended the 14th Annual Schola Cantorum: An Adult Choir Member Workshop, held on the campus of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Dr. Christopher Cock, director of choral and vocal activities at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., served as this year’s clinician. The Schola Cantorum was open to all choir members, choir directors and ministers of music. The schedule for the day included rehearsal sessions along with Morning and Closing Prayer services, at which the participants performed some of the music learned that day.

One participant commented, “An outstanding day, and additions to our choral library we can use right away!” Another participant said, “It is very enjoyable to have the opportunity to be with other choirs.”

Thirty people participated in the Choral Reading Session, held in conjunction with the Schola Cantorum on Jan. 13, in The Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus on the Concordia Seminary campus. In this evening of choral and instrumental song, Rev. David Johnson previewed new and current titles of music with participants.

“We are grateful to Dr. Christopher Cock for his musical leadership and to the many congregational choirs who took the time to learn and improve their singing skills,” commented Rev. Henry Gerike, director of choirs at Concordia Seminary. “Additionally, it was a pleasure to co-host with Concordia Publishing House the Choral Reading Session as a way of assisting choir directors in their planning for the church year.”

The 15th Annual Schola Cantorum will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. For more information about the Adult Choir Member Workshop, contact the Office of Continuing Education at (314) 505-7123 or
